In a recent Gräns broadcast on Sveriges Radio, Risk Intelligence Senior Adviser Robin Häggblom shared his perspective on Sweden and Finland’s defence cooperation and preparedness in the Arctic region.

Published on 28 October 2025, the Gräns broadcast by Swedish public radio featured Senior Advisor Robin Häggblom discussing Nordic defence cooperation in the Arctic. Robin noted that this marks a new era for Finnish officers, as others will now take key roles in decisions affecting the country’s defence. While Swedish support for Finland is not entirely new, he highlighted that this time the planning begins well in advance and without the limitations of Swedish neutrality. He added that this closer cooperation is reflected in the practical arrangements, with Finland expected to have the largest number of personnel in uniform in the Arctic, while Sweden contributes vital capabilities through the 19th Mechanised Brigade – a unit that trains daily in Arctic conditions and is considered one of Sweden’s most important assets. Robin also emphasised the long-standing and effective cooperation between Sweden and Finland across the North Calotte, while noting that ground-based air defence remains one of the key capability gaps within Sweden’s defence structure.
