In a recent BBC article, Risk Intelligence CEO Hans Tino Hansen shared his insights on the military capabilities involved in a potential US move to take control of Greenland.

Published on 7 January 2026, the BBC article highlights a range of scenarios under consideration by the US administration regarding Greenland. Risk Intelligence CEO Hans Tino Hansen notes that the Alaska-based 11th Airborne Division would be the primary capability in any invasion, supported by air force and naval assets.

However, he stresses that any attempt by the United States to “have” Greenland without the use of military force would fail as long as the Greenlandic population opposes it. He points out that no political parties in Greenland are campaigning to become part of the US and adds that Greenland is more likely to become a member of the European Union again. Hansen also notes the contrast between the US administration’s remaining three years and Greenland’s much longer-term perspective.
