THE INSIGHT:

During 2022 overall vessel boardings increased by 5%, although armed robberies decreased by 6% while thefts decreased by 13%. This is attributed to a significant 20% increase of failed attacks in which perpetrators left vessels empty-handed, in part due to enhanced vigilance of crew. The region experienced a total of 87 incidents compared with 84 in 2021, of which 48% were failed attacks, with 27 incidents of theft and 16 armed robberies.

55 of the incidents, representing 63% of the total, involved vessels transiting the Singapore Strait. More than half of the boardings in the Singapore Strait resulted with no items being stolen, while 7 were armed robberies and 17 were thefts. Armed robberies and thefts at the berths and anchorages of Belawan continue to raise concerns.
