Sveriges Radio | Experts on the violations – this is how NATO should respond
In a recent interview on Sveriges Radio, Risk Intelligence’s defence analyst Robin Häggblom shared his perspective on NATO airspace violations and defence challenges.
Published on 25 September 2025 on Sveriges Radio, the interview covers recent intrusions into NATO airspace, including drones and MiG-31s over Estonia, and the alliance’s response. Häggblom said that while these violations are serious, NATO has not yet reached a point where it would need to shoot down aircraft. He noted that it would be preferable for NATO to act collectively, as independent action by individual countries can be politically complicated. Häggblom also noted that the alliance knows which systems and sensors are needed to counter drone threats, but these currently exist only in prototypes or limited pre-series production and have not been acquired in sufficient numbers. He concluded that while immediate military action is not required, the situation is concerning and requires attention and strengthened defence capabilities.
