Maritime developments in West and Central Africa

Are security concerns for commercial shipping in the Gulf of Guinea now a thing of the past?

The number of piracy attacks in the Gulf of Guinea has sharply decreased since early 2021. Does that mean that the efforts to counter this threat have worked – and is the situation sustainable? This webinar provides a broad overview of recent developments with an impact on the security situation at sea and looks at the most important challenges in 2024.

Our analysts will also focus on increasing concerns related to drug trafficking in the region. Cocaine smuggling has become a particular concern as various West African countries have developed into transit hubs. This may have direct operational implications for individual ships as well as broader effects for maritime security as it feeds transnational crime groups which already exploit governmental shortcomings on land and at sea.
