30 April - Risk Intelligence has never employed Somali security officials

An article in the Ottawa Citizen (Canada) citing Senior Analyst Karsten von Hoesslin that Risk Intelligence had employed Somali security officials is unfortunately based on a misunderstanding by the journalist writing the article. The Somalia head of a militia protection team referred to was not employed in any way by Risk Intelligence.

Risk Intelligence has a large network of contacts and sources in areas such as Somalia and the wider Horn of Africa, but the company does not employ and will not employ security officials of any country within our area of operation.

With respect to comments concerning Ottawa, then the statement was that the area has been identified as a location where money is transferred to and from Somalia and it is possible that some of those financial transfers are for criminal activities including piracy. This is not unique to Ottawa, and money attained through criminal means has been transferred globally to beneficiaries within cities of high Somali diaspora such as e.g. Nairobi and London.
